Hanger (Screener Review)

Hanger is the long awaited film from Ryan Nicholson, owner of Plotdigger Films!

This is a film review only. My screener has some bugs, so pictures will not be available until later.

FILM- Hanger begins with a very pregnant hooker, Rose (played by genre harlot Debbie Rochon), being abused by her pimp Leroy. Turns out guys don't like "fat" (pregnant) hookers, so her income has taken a nose dive. With the threat of eviction from Leroy's brothel getting closer, she turns to her john for help. He's the father of the baby, and can't do anything because he must leave; however, he gives her $20.

After returning home, Rose decided to make a desperate escape. A freakish hooker sells her out to Leroy, and he storms in. Furious, he takes a wire coat hanger, and gives her a back alley abortion (in sickeningly graphic detail), After chucking the fetus in the dumpster, an old homeless man begins to hear it cry, and rescues "Hanger".

18 years later, Hanger is evicted from the bum's tent. As he plans to depart, his dad appears, and helps his deformed son get a house and a job. The house in little more than a motel room, and the job is sifting through all kinds of trash at a recycling plant. There he meets Russell, another deformed reject, and they quickly become friends. Also lurking around the plant is the disfigured gay rapist Phil, and smokin' hot foreman, Nicole. Hanger's dad sets out to take revenge on Leroy, and enlists the help of Hanger. Rose's former john is betrayed, and captured by Leroy. With his dad gone, how will Hanger fit in with the outside world? And how bloody will his revenge be?

Hanger is one weird ass film. I could end the review there, but I will elaborate. It's set in a world that's a cross between The Cars that Ate Paris and Deadbeat at Dawn. Everyone has heavy prosthetics, and no ones seems to care how vile and disgusting their "friends" are. Hanger's friend Russell is an avid tampon collector, makes tea with them, and keeps his collection with him at all times. Hanger could care less, is is very shy and meek. He's not the only one; pretty much every character is vile and disgusting, but like I said, no one cares.

The make up is fantastic. This is Nicholson's bets in my opinion, even surpassing Gutterballs. Most indie films that rely heavily on prosthetic makeup look sloppy, and the make up looks like garbage. There's not a visible seam anywhere in this film, which is quiet impressive. The practical effects are abundant, and never look bad. One scene that I was a little disappointed with was a shoot out. That scene was not what I expected, and is pretty simple; which might ruin the end of the movie for some.

The plot is a hit and miss really. I was expecting a revenge fest, but I got a comedy. I'm not joking, Hanger is predominately a comedy. If you like gross out films like Pink Flamingos, then you'll love this one. I like most of the movie, but some scenes are just not funny and drag on for way too long. The good thing is the gore always looks nice; and there's a bunch of it! I can see people who were expecting a "true" horror film not liking this. I would have preferred more revenge carnage and less gross out jokes, but I was entertained and happy with what I got. 8/10.
