Matthew Saliba's Vampyros Lesbos
Matthew Saliba is a relatively unknown short film maker from Montreal, Quebec. He has been making shorts since 2003, and Vampryos Lesbos is his latest offering.
FILM- Vampyros Lesbos is a 2o minute short; only borrowing the name and subject matter of the Jess Franco version. Franco fans rejoice; this is not a remake. What we have here is an erotic, still image (basically a sideshow) film. Linda and Omar watch a stage show in some high class strip club. The show features a vampire Countess Nadine, and her servant. Linda is automatically intrigued. She begins to dream about the Countess, and eventually she succumbs to her desires and joins her; imprisoning Omar in the process. He eventually escapes, and after is revived by a priest. Shortly he returns; this time with a machete, hammer, and the ultimate vampire cure there is...
Matthew Saliba knows his vampires. I see references to Vampyros Lesbos, Vampyres, and Daughters of Darkness. The style of this film is unbelievable. The images are gushing artistic merit. Imagine a scrapbook of erotic nudes done by Argento and you get the idea. The finale of this film is over the top, and the weapon used it just as shocking. This film has to have the best final shot of any movie. Ever. 9/10.
PICTURE/ AUDIO- The still images used in this film are amazing. The reds and blues are vibrant and beautiful to look at. The pictures are clear, and I would bet they were taken with a very nice HD camera. The transition between each photo works well, and the few effects added to the film also work nicely. 10/10. The audio is just several musical tracks. They are all from the modern rock scene, and mirror nicely with the film. I have to give Matthew Saliba credit; the final song in the film, combined with the final shot, was absoutly prefect. 10/10
EXTRAS- This film is independent, and the dvd is hand made. I didn't expect anthing other than a DVD-r, but I was plesanlty supprised. It comes with cover artwork, a main menu, and chapter stops. Pretty nice set up for a DVD-r, espically when you expected just a film on a disk. 3/10.
