The Gateway Meat
The Gateway Meat is the first full length film from For the Better of Mankind Productions; headed by Ron DeCaro. It is the conclusion to the "Brightside Trilogy"; consisting of Gateway, and the shorts Eating Razors, The White Lie. The Gateway Meat stands on it's own, and requiers no prior viewings of the shorts to understand what's going on.
FILM- The film centers around a family of Satanists, consisting of Marcus, his wife, daughter, and a mentally retarded man they keep for a specific purpose. Marcus's father is the leader of the Satanists, and lives by himself elsewhere. After the assassination of their idol, George W. Bush, they begin a quest to achieve the ultimate goal; opening a portal to hell. They believe the retarded man has the ability to do this. Marcus learns of his father's death, and decides to move into his house; the perfect spot to open the portal (his father has been constructing a shrine of human bodies in the basement for years). He entrusts his condo to his cousin, Roland. Roland is the kind of person who preys on girls using Myspace, and kills hitch hikers for fun. Not everything goes as planned, and soon Marcus is left with two major problems; how to open the portal, and Roland's housekeeping skills.
The Gateway Meat is a very clever film, and uses political, social, and religious satire as w weapon. This is also one of the GORYEST films of the past 10 years. Two words people; "pizza boy". The basement shrine is huge, and plastered with gore from top to bottom. The characters are great, and the acting is top notch. This film is a prime example of what low budget horror should be. 8/10.
PICTURE/ AUDIO- The picture looks good for the most part. At some instances of fast movement, we get a "ghosting" effect. For me, this is more annoying than an actual problem. The picture also has added in grit effects. Nothing along the lines of Planet Terror or anything like that, but there is a noticeable amount. This greatly adds to the film, and makes it feel like a gritty gore epic from years past. 8/10. The audio is the only place where this film falters. The sound quality of the audio is good; however, there are some balance problems. The audio fades in and out several times, and increases in volume frequently. I had to change the volume about 4 times while watching. If you keep it a little louder than normal, it shouldn't give you much trouble. 6/10.
EXTRAS- Now this is what I like to see; an indie feature FULL of extras. The DVD is a limited edition of 1000, and hand numbered. The first 100 are signed by the case and crew. The on disk extras include: a making of, two trailers, an audio commentary, still gallery, and audition footage. 8/10.
