Pig
Pig, released by Cult Epics, is a 23 minute short film from Nico B. and Rozz Williams (famous as the front man for the band Christian Death). This was Williams last project before his suicide in 1998. Williams labeled this film his exorcism, and the transition of his personal demons.
FILM- Pig is the story of a killer (Williams), and his victim. The killer picks up the victim roadside and takes him to an abandoned house; this is where the film turns dangerous. The killer systematically tortures the victim, all the while reading from a demented Bible entitled "Why God Permits Evil." This leads to a truly unnerving climax.
This film is very powerful for two reasons; one, it is a transfer of demons form Williams head to celluloid. This will not sit easy with some viewers, as his suffering is explicit in this film. Williams was truly a troubled genius. The second reason is there are no special effects in this movie. The tortures in the film are genuine body modifications. Granted this is not as bad as what half of those shock TV shows (Jackass, Dirty Sanchex, ect.) do; but this is not meant for humor. This is meant to hurt. And it does that effectively. Pig is a very bleak and depressing film, but at the same time a vivid work of art. There is a reason this is my favorite Short film. 10/10
PICTURE/ AUDIO- Pig was shot in black and white on 16mm. The film is soft looking at some points, and the grain is visible. This tremendously adds to the mood and feel of the film. I really praise Cult Epics for leaving the necessary amount of imperfections to make the film look genuine, not polished. The soundtrack was composed by Williams as expected, it fits the film perfectly. Again, Cult Epics has left just enough imperfections to make the audio track brilliant. Both picture and audio get a 9/10.
EXTRAS- Cult Epics has supplied amazing extras; in quantity and quality. These DVDs are limited editions of 1334 . The first 250 were signed by Nico B. The DVD extras include: commentary track by Nico B, photo gallery, outtakes, super 8 test film, biographies, an interview with Rozz Williams, an unreleased music track, and a memorial video. As if that wasn't enough, Cult Epics has reproduced "Why God Permits Evil" and has included it as 40 page booklet. This is the perfect companion to the movie, and looking over the book in person, simultaneously with the killer on screen, is a very unnerving experience. 10/10
