Cat in the Brain
Fulci fans have been waiting ever since Grindhouse Releasing announced this way back in 2005. Now the wait is finally over...
FILM- The premises of Cat in the Brain is simple; while working on his latest gore epic, a director (Fulci) is haunted by horrible visions and a murderous psychiatrist. Then end.
There are not many twists and turns in thins one, and this might turn off some gallio fans. This one is about gore, and lots of it. There is probably 15 minutes of footage in the whole movie that aren't blood soaked. We have everything from chainsaw mayhem to hatchet attacks; from stabbings to hit and runs. This film packs the gore. And this is one of my biggest issues with the film. The killings and gore are seen from Fulci's point of view. However, the on screen murders never show a killer, just a floating hand whacking parts off of people. This really took me away from the film, and made it seem like a mash up of gory clips rather than an actual movie. This will be the decision Fulci fans have to make; either enjoy the gore and forget about Fulci's stylish and intriguing slashers from his glory days, or pass this one over. There's not much of a middle ground here. I enjoyed the film for what it was. 7/10.
PICTURE/ AUDIO- Grindhouse has yet to falter with their quality. The picture is crisp and clear, with minimum grit and grime. This is truly the best the film has ever looked. The sound is nice as well. There are some instances of the volume dropping in and out, but there are no crackles or pops to speak of. As stated, Grindhouse does quality work. Picture gets a 9/10, while sound gets an 8/10.
EXTRAS- Grindhouse has supplied a plethora of extras: interviews with Lucio Fulci and Brett Halsey, footage of Lucio Fulci's appearance at the 1996 Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors, still gallery, trailers, and a very nice booklet of liner notes. 10/10
